Xavier's Inquiry Quiz

For my Inquiry project,  I have been learning all about the Olympic Refugee Team. I would love to test your knowledge on this topic and gain some data to use for my project. Please use the link below to complete my quiz. Good luck! Xavier. http://bit.ly/2c9jorg

Measurement Madness

As part of our learning on measurement we have been exploring using informal units of measurement.  The community listened to the story "How Long is a Foot?" then used this idea to measure objects around the classrooms.

The video and some photos are below!
Ask us about the problems the king faced and how he over came them.
Also as us about the importance of using a uniform unit of measurement.

3/4C St John Visit

Today St John's Ambulance are visiting Coprus Christi. Here is what 3/4C learnt today.

You should always look for danger!!

This is how to check if someone is  unconscious.
1. Call out their name.
2. Pinch their shoulders REALLY hard.

There was no response so Daniela called the ambulance.

This is how you remember the number! '000'

Next check for breathing. Normal breathing is 2-4 breaths in 10 seconds.

Finally we learnt about the recovery position. You can even do this with adults. Siobhan proved it by moving Miss Mauric into the recovery position.

Can we practice on you tonight?

Thanks for reading!

Two Day Shift at Bunning

We all had a great time at Bunnings this week.  We met Susie and Rosie who  were super helpful and so kind.  We were challenged to make a robot using only recycled materials e.g. cardboard boxes, piping, paddle pop sticks, bolts and door stoppers just to name a few.

We were given a time limit, some instructions and some inspiration before we put our designs down on paper. We worked as a team to build our robot and decorate it.

We all thought this activity was super fun and creative.  We had such a great time.

Ask us about our designs and what we would like to design or change if we had another chance.

Estimating Durations....

On Monday we started to learn about our unit on Time.  We began the unit through exploring duration of time through estimating how long a minute is.  Here is 3/4C showing their estimation skills.

Ask us about activities which take a short amount of time versus activities which take a long time.

Boat Building! Will it float?

In Inquiry, students were given the opportunity to construct boats within small groups. They were given a set of materials which included foam cups, string, straws, sticky tape and blue tac. They needed to first brainstorm their ideas for their design and share their ideas. The best idea was selected and students were asked to draw a sketch of their design before they were given time to build it. They needed to carefully consider how they would build their boat to make sure it would float. Students then got to test out if they were successful. It was a very fun activity and each group demonstrated excellent group work skills. Here are some photos of the students with their designs. Next they will be given time to reinvent and make changes to their design to enhance the chances of making their boat to float.

Using the Design Process...

Today we explored the Design Process!

Our problem to solve was that we needed to build a boat that floats, but we had limited materials!
We could only use polystyrene cups, straws, string, sticky tape, blu tack, skewers and tooth picks.

Tomorrow we will test our designs and make any changes to improve them :)

Wonderful Words

This afternoon as we were giving each other massages the word "temple" came up. Brendan noticed that temple had two meanings which lead to a conversation about homophones.

What are the homophones you know?

WOW work in 34C

This afternoon we explored how inventions can be useful in many different ways. These partners worked really well together to record a whole page of ideas. Well done!!

3/4's Friendly Acts

In the Year 3/4 Community we have been talking about how we can 'pay it forward' and do friendly acts for each other.

While the Year 4's were out today the Year 3's drafted a table of friendly acts which we will work towards doing one of each day! We also watched a video where many different people were 'paying forward' the friendly acts of kindness.

Check out our ideas below.

Coding Club Update!

Today the CCK Coding Club used www.code.org to learn more about how algorithms work on programs.

An algorithm is a list of set instruction or steps.

From the maze sequencing activity we did today:
Amy learnt to reread her algorithm.
Ashley learnt to test your algorithm before doing it all together.
Isabella learnt to try again after making mistakes
Ariam learnt that coding isn't easy, it's hard but if you keep trying it will get
easier.

Year 4s visit to Emmanuel College

Today the Years 4s got to experience a taste of life at high school. They undertook a range of special activities which included art, science and got to view both the Altona and Point Cook campuses. What fun!

Awesome Group work!

Michelle, Amy, Ashley and Lucinda worked so well in their Inquiry group this afternoon that we just had to share it with the world. Their focus invention was glasses. They discovered that glasses were invented in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin and are still used today to help people read, write and see. Great work guys!

Super Siobhan!!

Wow! What an outstanding effort by Siobhan! She worked really hard today to use skills learnt from the writing workshop to edit her work. Well done!

Brilliant Billy Carts

As part of our immersion for inquiry the whole of Year 3/4 was treated to play with and build Billy Carts today.

We got to design our very own billy carts and use the materials you would use to make a billy cart to build something of our own creation. We also had the opportunity to drive a billy cart.

When we were building the Billy Cart we had to split up in to two groups and have a race to see who could build the cart the quickest and who could dismantle it the neatest as well.  There was a procedure to follow and at times it was tricky!!  The quickest time  to build the billy cart was 4 minutes and 1 second.

Check out some of our memories from the day!

What did today make you wonder about inventing?

Brilliant Bridge Making!

What do you think our inquiry unit will be about?

Colour in Fractions

Today we learnt:
1) The numerator is the top number and tells us what to shade and the denominator is the bottom and tells us how many to cut the whole into.
2) How to order numbers on a number line
3) How to split fractions and find equivalent fractions

Way to go Samuel!!

Samuel has worked really hard over the last two days to use lots of descriptive language. 3/4 C liked how he used sounds like 'brrrr' and 'mmmmm' to enhance his descriptions. He also used similes really well! Well done Samuel!!
