Loops in Coding Club

Today in Coding Club we went back over looping and what it means to use looping.

Looping is when we repeat steps over and over and over and over again. You could repeat your steps 2 billion times!

Sean learnt how to use degrees when coding for example 'turn 90 degrees right / left'
Edwardo learnt how to use a repeat block and that you can put as many blocks inside a repeat block as you like.
Ashley and Amy N learnt how to repeat steps on code.org
Isabella learnt that looping can be written instructions such as dances or moving objects.

Two Day Shift at Bunning

We all had a great time at Bunnings this week.  We met Susie and Rosie who  were super helpful and so kind.  We were challenged to make a robot using only recycled materials e.g. cardboard boxes, piping, paddle pop sticks, bolts and door stoppers just to name a few.

We were given a time limit, some instructions and some inspiration before we put our designs down on paper. We worked as a team to build our robot and decorate it.

We all thought this activity was super fun and creative.  We had such a great time.

Ask us about our designs and what we would like to design or change if we had another chance.

Estimating Durations....

On Monday we started to learn about our unit on Time.  We began the unit through exploring duration of time through estimating how long a minute is.  Here is 3/4C showing their estimation skills.

Ask us about activities which take a short amount of time versus activities which take a long time.

Boat Building! Will it float?

In Inquiry, students were given the opportunity to construct boats within small groups. They were given a set of materials which included foam cups, string, straws, sticky tape and blue tac. They needed to first brainstorm their ideas for their design and share their ideas. The best idea was selected and students were asked to draw a sketch of their design before they were given time to build it. They needed to carefully consider how they would build their boat to make sure it would float. Students then got to test out if they were successful. It was a very fun activity and each group demonstrated excellent group work skills. Here are some photos of the students with their designs. Next they will be given time to reinvent and make changes to their design to enhance the chances of making their boat to float.

Taking the cats way home...

This week while the Year 3's have been bsy with their NAPLAN the Year 4 students have been reading and responding to the small chapter book Taking the Cat's Way Home.

Today we summarised the key events in the text through a cartoon strip.

Here is just a sample of the super impressive work completed!

Well done Kadin, Aiden and Axel

I want to write but....

Do you ever want to write a story but just don't know where to start?

Pobble356 is a great website which has loads of interesting pictures for you to base your stories or descriptive pieces on.

It even has story starters and questions you can use to get you thinking!

Check out the link below!

Using the Design Process...

Today we explored the Design Process!

Our problem to solve was that we needed to build a boat that floats, but we had limited materials!
We could only use polystyrene cups, straws, string, sticky tape, blu tack, skewers and tooth picks.

Tomorrow we will test our designs and make any changes to improve them :)

Meditation - Keeping a clear mind

Over the last number of weeks, the Grade 3/4 community has been exploring the different forms of prayer. While prayer is often found formally, the students have also recognize that communication with God can occur during meditation. Meditation is not only a great calming activity for stressful times, it also provides time for students to develop a deeper understanding of their emotions and internal awareness.

If you are interested in doing some meditation at home, the Smiling Mind program is a good place to start;           http://smilingmind.com.au/

Wonderful Words

This afternoon as we were giving each other massages the word "temple" came up. Brendan noticed that temple had two meanings which lead to a conversation about homophones.

What are the homophones you know?

WOW work in 34C

This afternoon we explored how inventions can be useful in many different ways. These partners worked really well together to record a whole page of ideas. Well done!!

Be Kind!!

In Wellbeing we have been discussing ways of being kind to others. Things as simple as smiling as someone to making sure to include others in a game can really help to brighten up somebody's day. We need to remember to treat others how we would like to be treated. Check out our cool Wellbeing display...

3/4's Friendly Acts

In the Year 3/4 Community we have been talking about how we can 'pay it forward' and do friendly acts for each other.

While the Year 4's were out today the Year 3's drafted a table of friendly acts which we will work towards doing one of each day! We also watched a video where many different people were 'paying forward' the friendly acts of kindness.

Check out our ideas below.

Coding Club Update!

Today the CCK Coding Club used www.code.org to learn more about how algorithms work on programs.

An algorithm is a list of set instruction or steps.

From the maze sequencing activity we did today:
Amy learnt to reread her algorithm.
Ashley learnt to test your algorithm before doing it all together.
Isabella learnt to try again after making mistakes
Ariam learnt that coding isn't easy, it's hard but if you keep trying it will get
easier.

Year 4s visit to Emmanuel College

Today the Years 4s got to experience a taste of life at high school. They undertook a range of special activities which included art, science and got to view both the Altona and Point Cook campuses. What fun!

Week 4 Stars of the Week!

Well done Amelie, Lola and Stephanie for being awarded the Stars of the Week this week! Keep up your outstanding efforts in helping our space and working hard to acheive!
